Every so often I need to get out of town and go somewhere and smell trees without the rat-a-tat-tat of jackhammers as background noise. Unfortunately, neither myself nor the Large Greek are very competent drivers, so that kind of limits our options. I decided a weekend in Woodstock would be nice. There's a bus that goes there and I found a cute place to stay that was advertised as a five-minute walk to town.
Despite spotting my evil ex-boss pretty much five seconds after exiting the bus (we hadn't even dropped off our suitcase yet!), the weekend was really fun. There was a creek, a pizza place that delivered and I even got to see my old pal, Dan, who drove down from Hudson.
I'm not sure if the BF fully realizes that these little trips upstate are auditions. I want to get a second home (not that we can afford one) and I like to try out different places. Hudson was a little too urban and antiquey for me and Woodstock was way too hippie dippy. Tie dye and dreamcatchers everywhere. White youths with dreadlocks, bumming for change and gray ponytail wearing Beemer-boomer hippies cruising down Tinker Street. So far Athens is winning the contest, but I have my eye on Catskill as well. Now I just need to come up with a large chunk of change. . . .
Unless you're in the market for a pot pipe or some hemp underpants, shopping here leaves a lot to be desired. Here's some of the aforementioned tie dye. The shoe stores carried exclusively comfortable shoes, like Birkenstocks. Nary an ill-advised heel to be found. If I lived here I would need earplugs (Grateful Dead! free jazz!) and make all my clothes purchases online.
Unfortunately, I did not get a photo of the giant brown spider that crawled across the bed looking to bite me (shades of Brady Bunch in Hawaii!) or the bat that attempted to dive-bomb my face. There was some girlish shrieking on my part, I'm ashamed to admit. Oh, and the "five minute walk to town" turned out to be more like 20 minutes through curvy mountain roads with no sidewalks. That was a little scary, but we did get our exercise. I even got a little sunburned. Next weekend, Rhode Island!
that sign RULES. i'm going to suggest that j. get one for the glitterwitch.
