Meet the McGuire-opoulos's new sofa. It's name is Loring and it's from Room and Board. We paid for this bad boy on August 10th and only got it this past weekend. For those of you without a calendar handy, that's almost three months later!!
I guess the delay was because we hated the stock fabric—a kind of polyester faux velvet that made your ass sweat as soon as you sat down—so we had it upholstered in a pricier blue velvet. Nice, right?
I was very excited because, besides from some bookshelves and a mattress, all of my other furniture is something I used to optimistically refer to as "vintage."
No more. I need to face facts and accept that all my other furniture is not vintage or antique, it's just plain old. Though the new piece is very nice, the fact is, having a shiny new sofa in your house makes everything else look like crap. So much so that I ran out on Sunday in search of some pretty new throw pillows because the old ones would just not do.
As I was discussing the merits of a $225 silk velvet number with the owner of the cute little tchotchke store on Grand (it would have to be a special vibrating pillow for that price), it occurred to me how strange it was that I could find something as idiotic as overpriced throw pillows in Williamsburg. I mean, when I moved here in '94, you could get Thai food, Polish beer, and crack hookers, no prob. Anything more complicated, you had to get on the L train to find. Now, thirteen years later, I have five or six options for hundred-dollar pillows, yet still don't have a decent supermarket. Ah, progress.
I bet it is great to sleep on... Congratulations, it is perfect!

Are those poppy flowers on the pillow?
If so where can I get a small planeload of them?

Lori—very good to hear. It's pretty, but I worry about its future.
Jules—there's no way we'd purchase a sofa that wasn't long enough for Spyro to sleep on. So yep, you'll fit on it quite comfortably. Very firm!
Murkin—they are indeed poppies. Unfortunately, they're felt. Spyro discovered this the hard way.

Can't wait for the sleepover party. I hope that thing's drool-resistant. Not that I drool when I sleep, of course, but, you know, I'm just sayin'...
Anyway, it's really beautiful.
