I took a couple more photos of the goings-on at the McCarren Park Mews at North 11th Street and Roebling. This is a but a sampling of the stanky, oily dirt that is probably going to be responsible for every breeder in a six-block vicinity giving birth to flipper babies who develop cancer by age six. I cannot stress enough how nasty this lot smells. And they've been digging it up for months!
Note the greasy slick leading out to the street. I'm really excited that the Mews is spreading the wealth. It's like a big old mess of stinky toxic brownie batter oozing out all across the 'hood. Yum.
Contrast that oily dirt with this "real" dirt, presumably trucked
in from elsewhere. I know my photo isn't so great, but this soil is
light brown and the consistency of regular old dirt like you'd find in
your garden (unless you gardened at the Mews). I'm guessing they're
bringing this stuff to replace the gunk. I feel sorry for the workers
who toil knee-deep in this crap all day. It's bad enough to breath it
in; can't imagine trying to scrub it offa me.
ah, and did you hear about the crane tipping over outside my old window? unbelievable.

I saw a photo of that mess. Nice one. One funny thing happened today--I went into Manhattan and for a few minutes thought my block's stench had followed me into the office. But it was the mystery gas smell that made all the papers!
