My shabby little pink building is pretty much surrounded by new construction. Of course we have Private Sunsire Square out front (though oddly, it's triangular in shape) and that's protected for now, but the Gigantic Bayard Street Atrocities are over on the next block, the toxic death dump condos are diagonally across the street and it looks as though something giant is going up on North 10th. But across Roebling lays the most intriguing new construction of the bunch. They're calling it the McCarren Park Mews. Never mind it's a full block away from the park. Unless they make it a very tall building, there's little chance of my new neighbors even catching a glimpse of the garbage-strewn patch of dirt that all the developers are inexplicably considering a draw to the hood.
Hmm. Now when I think of Mews, I think of this quaint little cobblestoned strip of buildings by Washington Square Park. Don't you?
According to Wikipedia—admittedly, not the most accurate source, but I'm going to trust them on this—a "mews" is a "certain type of stabling with living quarters." Stables? Now this I find exciting!
If they're building stables, that can only mean one thing—ponies!!!! Even though the non-stop construction noises are sending me koo-koo, it'll all be worth it if there are ponies! When I was a little girl, the only thing I ever wanted was a pony. I read a Lincoln Steffens story where he told his parents that if they didn't get him a pony for Christmas, they could forget about gifts at all. His strategy worked beautifully for him. I tried it and was thwarted. My parents just rolled their eyes and laughed at me. Try as I might, my entire (sob, whimper) childhood, the only ponies I ever received were of the toy variety. Who would've guessed that as a grown-up lady, I'd finally be getting my wish!
Suddenly, real-estate developers don't seem like such bad guys after all!
Judy, why didn't you tell me that today was the day you were going to start taking LSD again?
